Union Slough Wildlife Refuge was established in 1938 to provide breeding ground and refuge for migratory birds. The wildlife refuge is over 3,300 acres and has a wide variety of plants and flowers throughout the slough. It was exciting to see the beautiful Trumpeter Swans during our drive through. Trumpeter swans are native to North America and have a wingspan that could exceed 10 feet. They are so beautiful! I was raised on a farm in Iowa and even though I live in town now, I'm still drawn to the open spaces in the country. Usually to relax and rejuvenate I will turn on the first gravel road I see when I drive out of town. Of course that changes all the time. I blow with the wind and if there isn't a wind I go where and when I feel the urge to turn. I do stop for barns, horses, old farm machinery or old trucks and cars.
