Sometimes there can be a few challenges with nature photography but I love that! I'll even take a photo between the trees if I have to. I find it very difficult to pass up an opportunity to photograph birds and other wildlife in their own environment. This beautiful Great Blue Heron was walking smoothly and slowly along the shore line of Black Hawk Lake in Lake View Iowa. They are a very tall bird and spear their prey with their long bill. This beautiful bird is the largest heron in North America. They usually can be seen in marshes, swamps, lakes, slow moving rivers and even smaller creeks. I try to look along creeks when I pass them in my travels because I've seen several in different parts of Iowa that will be relaxing and finding food in creeks. I was raised on a farm in Iowa and even though I live in town now, I'm still drawn to the open spaces in the country. Usually to relax and rejuvenate I will turn on the first gravel road I see when I drive out of town. Of course that changes all the time. I blow with the wind and if there isn't a wind I go where and when I feel the urge to turn. I do stop for barns, horses, old farm machinery or old trucks and cars.
