The Red-winged Blackbird is considered to be one of the most bountiful birds in North America. It can be seen in the marshes hanging on to cattails, in road side ditches or gripping a telephone wire. The males are a beautiful gleaming black with a red patch on the shoulder with a smaller patch of yellow feathers below the red. Females look nothing like the males but look more similar to an oversized sparrow with a splash of orange tint on their throat , shoulder and sometimes towards the corner of the eye. While visiting Twin Lakes I saw several Red-winged Blackbirds clinging to cattails, wires and bulrush stems. There were also some females gathered around the marsh area but they are less conspicuous because their colors aren't as bright and brilliant. I was raised on a farm in Iowa and even though I live in town now, I'm still drawn to the open spaces in the country. Usually to relax and rejuvenate I will turn on the first gravel road I see when I drive out of town. Of course that changes all the time. I blow with the wind and if there isn't a wind I go where and when I feel the urge to turn. I do stop for barns, horses, old farm machinery or old trucks and cars.
