Description
Even though this bird looks small and harmless, it’s nickname is “butcher bird”. Shrike’s are fearsome predators. Their diet includes, mice, snakes, frogs and even other birds. Before eating larger insects or vertebrate prey, Shrike’s will hang them head up on a barbed wire fence or thorn. Sometimes they will also wedge their prey into the fork of a branch. They don’t always eat their prey immediately but will leave it for days or even weeks before they return to eat. Their dark hooked bill is used to bite the necks of their prey to sever the vertebrae. While flying they can catch bugs and swallow them whole. Their habitats are around cultivated land, open country with scattered trees and open areas. They can be seen in North America, North Africa, Europe and Asia. The Fine Art America watermark will not appear on your purchase.
