Description
The Northern Shoveler has the largest bill of any duck in North America. Nick named spoonbill, the long flat black bill is used to glide side to side under the surface to filter out seeds and invertebrates from the water. Shovelers can often be seen bottoms up as well. The males have distinctive yellow eyes, black bill, green shiny head feathers, white breast, brown sides, black back and orange feet. While in flight you can also see the beautiful light gray blue shoulder feathers and green feathers at the bottom of the wings. The females look similar to the mallard hen but with the notable long bill being the biggest difference. Female shovelers have orange bills and feet and mostly browns in feather patterns.
